Alistair Brownlee update – The Road to Recovery

Following his recent spell on the sidelines due to injury, we caught up with 2009 Triathlon World Champion and Garmin Ambassador Alistair Brownlee to talk recovery and the target ahead.

“The last
month has been an interesting and satisfying one. Possibly the only good
thing  about being injured is the
satisfaction of starting to train again and how quickly improvements are made
to begin with. I did my first hard running in mid April which was Hill Reps up
a 600 ft climb (with a drive back down) to help improve my aerobic fitness with
reduced impact on my injury. I started doing some fast, but not too fast,
running on the flat with 5 one minute reps on a grass playing field.

Another
advantage of not running much has been that I have enjoyed more time on my bike
and some long rides in the brief spell of good weather. I try to keep my riding
as varied as possible when cycling across and through the Yorkshire Dales
.

Over the last
few weeks I have being reducing my cycling hours and trying to increase the
running miles I am doing each week. I have found this particularly difficult
because I have found that my body is not used to running and struggles to
recover between sessions. This week will hopefully be the first week where I
have managed to achieve a “normal” running week. I potentially will race in the
Madrid World Championship Series race in 2 weeks, even though I know I will not
be fully fit, but I am itching to get back racing soon.

All the best
Alistair. “
