Team Garmin’s Grand Depart
Yesterday saw an estimated crowd of 100,000 watch the opening stage of the Tour of Britain – a fast and furious ten lap race around central London that started and finished in the shadow of Big Ben on the Embankment.
Team Garmin was active throughout, with Chris Sutton sneaking into an eight-man breakaway, which, at one stage had a lead of almost a minute on the main field. They were eventually reeled in by the peloton two laps from the end, and the stage was set for a frantic sprint finish. This was won by Alessandro Petacchi of the LPR team, with Team Garmin’s Magnus Backstedt just pipped into 3rd place.
