Team Garmin Help to ‘Bash’ a Sailing World Record with Bart’s Bash

This September, sailing clubs around the world took part in the first annual Bart’s Bash event, a sailing race organised by the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation charity – honouring the memory of Olympic sailor, Andrew ‘Bart’ Simpson. This incredible race received global support and was held across 768 venues and saw thousands of sailors across the world break a Guinness World Record, whilst raising money for an incredible youth charity.

At Garmin we felt privileged that the Team Garmin Clipper 70 was part of this amazing event at the Clipper Race Yacht Club, in Gosport Premier Marina, following our sponsorship of the Clipper Round the World Yacht Race.

Bart’s Bash received huge support on a global level and events were held a wide range of locations all over the world, from the Caribbean all the way back to sunny Gosport. Over 3600 boats took part in the Bash, smashing the Guinness World Record for ‘The Largest Sailing Event in 24 Hours (Multiple Venues)’. Each race had to meet World Record guidelines and the Clipper 70 24.8 mile course was specially created for the event.

The event was hugely successful in raising awareness and funds for the Foundation, which aims to inspire the next generation of sailors. Out of the hundreds of worldwide sailing clubs that took part, we were thrilled that the Team Garmin were ranked 5th in class- an incredible achievement!

Sailing legend and Clipper Race chairman, Sir Robin Knox-Johnston, took part in the event and commented: “Congratulations to the team at the Andrew Simpson Sailing Foundation for creating such a successful, global sailing event. It was a proud moment for all at the Clipper Race Yacht Club to be able to join together, be part of history and raise funds for the first ever Bart’s Bash.”
