Dan Martin’s solo attack earns stage win and overall jersey for Team Garmin Sharp

Stage four of the Volta a Catalunya proved to be the Queen stage of this seven stage race through Spain, and was a successful one for Team Garmin Sharp. The guys in argyle showed, once again, that teamwork pays off. During the 135 mile (217km) mountain stage, Irishman Dan Martin found himself in a breakaway being led by teammate and Giro d'Italia winner Ryder Hesjedal. Hesjedal, knowing Martin is in top form, sacrificed his energy in hopes that Martin would eventually slingshot past for the victory- which he did!

Martin now sits atop the field in the overall classification and teammates Peter Stetina and Tom Danielson sit in eighth and eleventh respectively.
Martin, who now calls Spain home during the off season, considers this to be a "home race" and used his local knowledge of the roads to his advantage. Using the data from his Edge 510, Martin knew the exact point at which he needed to attack the field on the snow lined roads up the climb to Port-Ainé. The racing continues today where Garmin Sharp will attempt to protect the lead and help bump Stetina and Danielson up the standings.
