Garmin launches GNX™ Marine Instruments
Garmin has announced two new compact and customisable hybrid display instruments to join its extensive marine product range. Designed for use on all types of vessels, and with specific sail racing features, these compact and easy-to-read displays show 50 different data parameters including depth, speed and wind using high contrast 36 mm digits, graphs and gauges.
The GNX20 features black digits, and the background colour can be changed from traditional grey to a choice of seven different backlight colours, even offering the option to customise one chosen colour for optimum viewing. The GNX21 features the inverted display of white digits, which can be changed to any available colour, on a black background. This inverted black background is often preferred for night time visibility.
The 4 inch (10.16 cm) monochrome displays are glass bonded with an anti-glare finish to increase visibility and prevent fogging. Both instruments are easy-to-install and can be flush or flat mounted.
Designed to provide all the data users require when sailing, fishing and powerboating, the GNX20 and 21 feature exceptionally low power consumption (0.35W with no backlight, and 0.4W at night with mid-level backlighting), thus avoiding having to turn on engines or generators while on the water to keep the instruments operating.
Using the NMEA2000 interface with optional NMEA0183 interface via additional power and data cable, the GNX20 and GNX21 will monitor and display up to 50 data fields, including GPS speed, water depth and temperature. Data from wind sensors such as Garmin’s gWind™, gWind™ Wireless and gWind™ Race show highly precise and fast changes to wind speed and direction.
With Garmin’s ‘power of simple’ philosophy, the GNX20 and GNX21 are easy-to-operate, enabling users to set up their own customised displays. The screen can be configured to show single, dual or triple functions, or set up for dedicated graph or gauge mode. Users can choose how quickly data pages cycle or when data scrolls at set time intervals, allowing true hands-free operation on the water.
Easy to retrofit on any type of sailboat, powerboat or RIB, the GNX20 retails at around £330, and the GNX21 costs around £370 with its additional race data features. The GNX20 and GNX21 are available now through Garmin’s extensive network of retailers and technical dealers.
