Silverware and scorelines secure convincing pre-season start for Sarries
Garmin-sponsored Saracens Rugby Union Club have kicked off 2010/11 in winning form with a triumphant spell of victories in the run-up to the season. A pair of friendly fixtures against French side Bayonne racked up a 24-23 scoreline in the opening game in the Stade Jena Dauger with Ben Ransom, Kameli Ratuvou and Mouritz Botha each crossing the line.
The second fixture saw the home side strike back to snatch a 22-17 scoreline over the Sarries, but not before our squad showed some flashes of excellence, with England International wing David Strettle outpacing three Bayonne players to cross the line.
Demonstrating Saracens’ eye for silverware this season, the team have been crowned Premiership Sevens champions at the cup final in Bath against Newcastle Falcons, after defeating Sale Sharks and Northampton Saints in the Pool rounds.
The Sharks match saw Sarries sprint into the lead with a Kevin Barrett try after clever hands from Jackson Wray. Nils Mordt converted the try before teaming up with Noah Cato to race all the way to the line – and a 14-0 half-time lead.
Saracens started the Saints fixture with a flyer, Cato picking up the ball under his own posts and running the length of the field before Mordt picked up the conversion. With Jackson Wray in the sin bin for fighting, Saracens demonstrated their strength and commitment by scoring a further two tries while one man down.
The final clash against Falcons saw Sarries secure a 17-5 victory thanks to a pair of Kevin Barrett tries and a score from George Kruis.
A return to France for a fixture against Bordeaux Begles saw a convincing 22-17 scoreline in Saracens’ favour, with Ethienne Reynecke setting the tone by crossing the line in the opening minutes. With the weekend’s Premiership Sevens victory still ringing in their ears, the squad pushed to victory and back from 17-5 down with a pair of tries, a conversion and drop goal to win the game.
Garmin is main team sponsor of Saracens Rugby Football Club 2010/11. Sarries starts its Aviva Premiership campaign on 4 September 2010 in a fixture against London Irish at Twickenham.
