Recycled Ocean-bound Plastics Given New Life in this Garmin Dive Watch Computer
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure — or, in this case, one person’s ocean-bound plastics is another person’s Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition.
The idea behind this rugged watch-style dive computer was born when a handful of Garmin associates put their heads together to figure out ways to better their environment.
They already spent their free time out on the water and went out of their way to make it as clean an environment as possible, often removing plastic. But why not take it a step further?
A recurring question surfaced during discussions: What can we do and how can we begin to put some of this plastic to good use?
Ultimately, the group discovered that ocean-bound plastics could successfully be recycled and converted into the shape of the watch housing, bezel and buttons — resulting in a rugged, eco-friendly dive computer designed to help users dive confidently and responsibly without sacrificing durability.
The Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition is up to 100-meter dive-rated, which maintains our rigorous engineering standards.
Found along the shore, these ocean-bound plastics are primarily comprised of nylon fiber fish nets. They are tough to break down and are a strong material perfect for a rugged watch housing.
And while ocean-bound plastics can be harmful to the environment, it turns out their durability is perfect for combining with other materials for a rugged watch housing.
After the ocean-bound plastics are collected, they’re transported to a recycling facility, sorted by color, cleaned and dried.
They’ll then be converted into a pelletized resin and incorporated with glass fiber before ultimately being molded to create the watch housing, bezel and buttons.
Solar Charging
The housing of the Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition isn’t the only eco-friendly component of the sustainable watch.
As the name suggests, the Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition features a solar charging lens that lets divers explore longer with up to 25 hours of battery life in dive mode and up to 124 days in smartwatch mode with solar charging1.
Plus, it acts as both a dive watch and a dive computer all in one, requiring less equipment for divers to use while in action. Multisport and smartwatch features also help users live an active lifestyle out of the water.
Ready to take the plunge? Help us combat ocean-bound plastics and enjoy an elevated diving experience with the Garmin Descent G1 Solar – Ocean Edition.
