Garmin Enhances “Black Box” Navigator for Automotive OEMs
OLATHE, Kan.–(BUSINESS WIRE)–Garmin International Inc., a unit of Garmin Ltd. (NASDAQ: GRMN), the global leader in satellite navigation, announced today the GVN 54, a next-generation version of its OEM-configurable “black-box” GPS navigation system, featuring the company’s latest advanced features and user interface refinements. The GVN 54 can be customized to include built-in GPRS/EDGE connectivity to utilize Garmin Connected services, offering OEMs a plethora of powerful services such as internet-based local search, white page listings, real-time traffic, weather, fuel prices, flight schedules, and much more. The system was announced in conjunction with the SEMA Show, which opens on November 3 at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
“The GVN 54 turns a vehicle’s A/V system into a leading-edge street navigator,” said Roger Jollis, Garmin’s director of OEM and mobile marketing. “We’re able to accommodate virtually any OEM’s requirements by customizing this self-contained navigation module to meet automotive OEM specifications, including connectivity to Garmin Connected Services including traffic, weather, and fuel prices.”
Garmin can work with OEMs to design a custom system that features traditional FM-RDS traffic service or a combination of location based services through Garmin nuLink!. This portfolio of location-based services provides direct links to time- and money-saving services like Google™ local search, traffic, weather, fuel prices, movie listings, flight status, local events, and white page telephone listings. Garmin can also collaborate with OEMs to include custom points of interest databases as well as splash screens, vehicle icons, and special branding.
The base GVN 54 module contains a pre-loaded database for either North America or Europe including points of interest, turn-by-turn directions with spoken street names. It has been enhanced with an updated version of the Garmin’s award-winning user interface, including lane assist with junction view. These features let drivers see a realistic presentation of road signs and junctions along the route, as well as arrows that indicate the proper lane for navigation. Map data is provided by NAVTEQ™ – a world leader in premium-quality mapping. Maps can be easily updated by replacing an SD card. For regions outside of North America and Europe the GVN 54 will support locally sourced Garmin maps where available.
To help drivers make their gas tanks go the extra mile, the GVN 54 comes equipped with ecoRoute™, Garmin’s proprietary software that suggests more fuel-efficient routes. In addition to “faster time” and “shorter distance” for route preference, ecoRoute lets nüvi users choose “less fuel” as the best way to save gas and money.
The GVN 54’s hardware features an accelerated graphics processor for fast map rendering, simultaneous RGB with CSYNC and composite NTSC outputs, as well as an analog stereo line level output that can interface with a wide variety of head unit displays.
